One would think that if Tyson Fury defeats Deontay Wilder in their upcoming trilogy fight and Anthony Joshua gets past Oleksandr Usyk, that the heavyweights would unify with undisputed glory on the line.
Well, not so fast.
While speaking with talkSPORT's Gareth Davies, "The Gypsy King" suggested that he's willing to have a fight with a different opponent than AJ if successful against Wilder on July 24.
“If I get through Wilder then we’ll see who’s available after that and who’s out there," Fury said. “I might take a voluntary defense."
He added: “All these fighters are gonna get their chance. They’re all gonna get their five minutes of fame in the sunshine and they’re all gonna get their opportunity to fight the ‘Gypsy King.'"
And Fury even evoked a slew of names that would be of interest to further drive his point home.
“You’ve got (Oleksandr) Usyk, you’ve got Dillian Whyte, you’ve got Andy Ruiz, Joseph Parker. Who else? Luis Ortiz, can’t write him off," Fury rattled off one by one. “Big Charles Martin’s making a comeback. There’s so many big fights out there to fight, there’s a lot of people all gunning to get a shot at a title of some sort.”
Now, Fury has never been foreign to joking but has injected truth into jest before.
Following his draw with Wilder in their first clash, Fury spurned the "Bronze Bomber" by taking on not one, but two other opponents in German boxer Tom Schwarz and Swedish fighter Otto Wallin in June and September 2019, respectively, before reprising his rivalry with Wilder in February 2020.
So, anything is possible.
