Lomachenko and Lopez could be headed for a unification bout on Sept. 19.

The wait for Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. Teofimo Lopez may soon be over.

According to Top Rank's Bob Arum, the fight, which was originally supposed to take place in May, could have a date of Sept. 19, per ESPN.

Fans of "Hi-Tech" (14-1-0, 10 KOs) have been waiting for his next fight since he made pretty easy work of Luke Campbell in August 2019, his 13th straight victory. While the fight went to the cards, Lomachenko dominated all three of the judges' scores, 119-108, 119-108 and 118-109.

At present, Lomachenko is one of the world's top pound-for-pound boxers and holds the WBO, WBC, WBA (super) and Ring lightweight championships. He also holds WBO straps in the super featherweight and featherweight divisions.

He'll be facing a tough opponent in Lopez, a rising star with 12 of his 15 wins coming by way of knockout. Lopez has been vocal about wanting to fight Lomachenko, while both fighters have been reluctant to take stay-busy fights in in the interim.

"I try to make these fights happen for the fans, the fans are the ones that win at the end of the day. But honestly, we're not going to wait on this guy," Lopez said in March, also via ESPN. "We gave him everything he needs and everything he wants, and now he's complaining about New York, he wants it in Vegas, he wants it in Cali. It's been annoying."

Lopez is coming off a fairly long layoff himself, defeating Richard Commey in December 2019 via second-round TKO. With the win, Lopez secured the IBF lightweight title.
