Errol Spence Jr. might have gotten tired of hearing Vergil Ortiz Jr. saying that he wants to fight him someday in the near future.
During a recent Instagram Live chat with Ray Flores, Spence remembered his fellow Texan, Ortiz, as a "crybaby" who "used to cry a lot" as a kid, and said that the rising welterweight is still "two, three years" away from challenging him for his unified IBF/WBC welterweight crown.
Well, those comments didn't sit well with Ortiz at all.
Earlier in the week, he took to his Twitter account and fired back at Spence, remixing his nickname from "The Truth" to "The Lie" and sparking a back-and-forth exchange with the champ.
That prompted Spence to double down on the memories of Ortiz crying as a kid in the same Dallas boxing gym that both fighters earned their chops in coming up.
Spence and Ortiz taking swipes at each other comes after Ortiz made sure to assert himself last year during interviews and promo spots as a serious challenger to Spence.
During a recent sitdown for DAZN's "10 Rounds" segment, Ortiz even put a timeframe on when he could possibly fight Spence.
"I think I'll be ready for Errol Spence in less than two years, honestly," he said late last month. "I don't want to wait too long to where he's already on his way out. I want to be able to say that I beat Errol in his prime. And hopefully we get it on in the Dallas Cowboys' stadium (AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Tex.)."
At 22, Ortiz is 15-0 with all of his victories coming by the way of knockout. The 30-year-old Spence (26-0, 21 KOs) has mentioned wanting to fight either WBA welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao or WBO titleholder Terence Crawford in his return bout once the coronavirus pandemic subsides.
Spence hasn't fought since scoring a split decision over Shawn Porter in September. The following month he was involved in a horrific one-car crash, in which he miraculously only sustained minor injuries despite being ejected out of the vehicle.
