Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Fredrick Lawson: American reveals ambitions for 2024DAZN
The two fight on DAZN this Saturday night.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. is hoping to fight four times this year after being out of the ring for two years.

The 23-year-old has 18 knockouts from 18 fights as he looked on course to be real contender in the welterweight division.

However in recent years he has suffered from a string of health problems, including rhabdomyolysis, and earlier this year he was due to fight WBA welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis, but it was cancelled three times and Ortiz has since moved up to 154lbs.

He will fight Fredrick Lawson and the American is the heavy favourite, but he desperately needs another win on the board to start rebuilding his career and reputation.

The fight will be shown live on DAZN this Saturday, and speaking to BoxingScene.com, he outlined his ambitions.

“I definitely wanna fight at least three times this year,” Ortiz said “I wanna shoot for four. I wanna get my momentum back. You know, I had a lot of momentum, and a lot of that momentum was when I was fighting three, four times a year. I wanna be active.

“I want my name to be in peoples' mouths again. I just wanna do my job. I’ve been training. It’s like you’re training for something, and then you don’t get to do your job, and you’re just training for nothing.”

He continued: “Training has gone very well. I feel like this is honestly the best I’ve felt in a very long time, to the point where it feels familiar. You know, like, ‘I almost forget what this feels like.’ So, I’m ready. I’m ready mentally and physically.”
