Mikey Garcia didn't get the desired result in his welterweight debut last March, but that was against Errol Spence Jr. — one of the best boxers the sport has to offer.
The four-division world champion now looks to make amends for that lopsided unanimous decision loss and prove that he's a legit threat at 147 pounds when he faces Jessie Vargas on Saturday night. It all takes place at The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, live on DAZN.
"I know there’s a lot more that I can do. I hope that on the 29th of February, I will answer all of those questions," said Garcia (39-1, 30 KOs) regarding his ability in the rugged division. "I will give all the fans a great performance that they can really look at me and be like, 'This guy is a true contender at welterweight. He can actually fight at welterweight.'"
Vargas, himself a not-so-shabby two-division world champion, wants to use the opportunity to show Garcia and fans that he's a warrior with his best fighting days still in front of him. After enduring back-to-back draws with Adrien Broner and Thomas Dulorme in 2018, Vargas notched a sixth-round KO of Humberto Soto in April as his sole ring performance of 2019.
“I definitely feel that I am in my prime now,” said Vargas (29-2-2, 11 KOs). “I feel good, solid, very experienced. I’ve gained plenty of knowledge throughout the years, and I think that I am in the best time in my career because of all that experience."
