Daniel Jacobs knew a change needed to happen after losing his IBF middleweight title to Canelo Alvarez back in May. He was cutting an extreme amount of weight to make the 160-pound limit, and it was starting to affect his performance inside the ring.
On Friday, Dec. 20, the two-time middleweight champion begins the next phase of his career with the trek up to a higher weight as he squares off against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. from the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, live on DAZN.
“I've been able to be genuinely happy, to focus only on training and focus only on my skillset and not on the idea of cutting 10 to 15 pounds before the weigh in," Jacobs said in a news release. "So, it's a big deal for me, and I'm happy and I'm looking forward to showing everyone in the world that it wasn't an excuse last time around.
“It was the actual fact of me cutting the weight, and that would make a difference in the previous fights that I've been having. So now you're going to see, in my opinion, a better version of myself, and I look forward to that."
The fight against Chavez originally had the super middleweight 168-pound limit, but it was changed on Thursday to a catchweight of 173 pounds. Jacobs came in at 167.7 pounds, while Chavez weighed 172.7.
This is only the second time Chavez (51-3-1, 33 KOs) will compete since he lost to Alvarez in May 2017. The son of the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez returned in August to knock out Evert Bravo. But the 33-year-old almost didn't make the Jacobs fight. He'd been given an indefinite suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for failing to submit to a random drug test in October as the bout was scheduled to occur at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Chavez went on to sue the NSAC. On Tuesday, a Nevada State Court judge granted Chavez a temporary restraining order, so he's cleared to face Jacobs in Arizona.
"This is the right fight to get me back to the top,” Chavez Jr. said in a news release. "It’s a big risk because of the activity he’s had, but I am not a stepping stone for him, I am ready and I need to win the fight, and I know I have the skills and the heart to win."
Will moving up in weight be the cure to Jacobs' problems? Is Chavez finally in the right frame of mind to live up to his potential?
