William Zepeda's obliteration of Giovanni Cabrera over the weekend improved his record to 31-0 with 27 knockouts, while inching him that much closer to a lightweight world championship shot.
In a video posted on DAZN Boxing's YouTube page Tuesday, DAZN's Chris Mannix said of all the lightweight world titleholders — including Gervonta "Tank" Davis, Shakur Stevenson, Vasiliy Lomachenko and Denys Berinchyk — that the latter is most likely the direction that Golden Boy will go toward with Zepeda in securing a championship opportunity.
"Moments ago, I was chatting with Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy. He brought Denys Berinchyk's name up, the WBO titleholder," Mannix said. "I'm told that they have spoken with the WBO about making a fight between Berinchyk and Zepeda."
He added: "That certainly is a fight that could happen before the end of the year."
Zepeda had mentioned WBC champion Stevenson's name as a titleholder of interest, but in a recent interview with Cigar Talk on YouTube, Stevenson expressed a hunch that Zepeda would more likely look to Berinchyk and Mannix's conversation with Gomez seemingly confirms just that.
"I think they’re banking on another fight where they can win a belt — Berinchyk," Stevenson said. "They don’t want this belt. They don't want the WBC belt."
