Who is Devin Haney? Background, record, championships, biggest wins of George Kambosos Jr.'s next opponentDAZN

When you think of top young names in boxing, Devin Haney's name is always in the conversation,

Haney took the unconventional route on his path to fighting for the undisputed lightweight championship on Saturday as the WBC titlist battles unified 135-pound champion George Kambosos Jr.

The 23-year-old began his professional career in 2015 but had to start in Mexico as he wasn't old enough to secure a license in the United States. From there, "The Dream" hasn't looked back, going undefeated so far in 27 professional contests heading into the most important bout of his career.

Championships

Haney won the vacant interim WBC title with a fourth-round stoppage over Zaur Abdullaev in September 2019. After Vasiliy Lomachenko was declared "The Franchise" champion by the sanctioning body, Haney was elevated to full term champion.

Since then, Haney has defended his belt on four occasions leading into his four-belt unification against Kambosos.

The knock on Haney had been, he'd hadn't faced quality opposition. That wasn't of Haney's doing as he tried to make a fight with Lomachenko. But Lomachenko didn't want the fight and Haney's been unable to lure other top lightweights to get inside the ring.

The narrative started to change when Haney took on former 135 and three-division champion Jorge Linares in May 2021. Besides an overhand right which rocked Haney for the first time in his career, Haney gained the most significant win at that time, dominating throughout to win by unanimous decision.

Haney followed the performance up at the beginning of December with a commanding showing over former 130-pound titlist Jo Jo Diaz to storm into the fight he's been dreaming of.
