After bouncing back from a serious hand injury with three victories in 2021, Joe Cordina now has a chance to win his first world title when he takes on IBF 130lb champion Kenichi Ogawa on Saturday live on DAZN (except Australia and New Zealand).
For Cordina, this is a huge step up against an experienced opponent who will have his sights set on unification fights if he can safely navigate past the Welshman in front of his passionate fanbase.
After securing wins in his first eight fights as a professional, Ogawa suffered his first loss against Yuki Miyoshi in 2012. The Japanese fighter then bounced back from this loss and got his revenge over Miyoshi two fights later. Since then, Ogawa has continued to rise through various rankings and is now a world title holder at super featherweight.
Championships
Ogawa’s first shot at the IBF 130lb title came in December 2017 against Tevin Farmer. Ogawa won this fight via a controversial split decision, but this fight was later ruled a no contest after Ogawa tested positive for a banned substance.
It would be another four years before Ogawa got another world title shot, but this time, he made sure he would be walking away from the ring with the belt.
Azinga Fuzile was the man who stood in Ogawa’s way at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in November 2021, but the Japanese fighter made easy work of his South African opponent. With Fuzile knocked down in rounds five and 12, Ogawa ensured that he could be sure of a win on the scorecards and indeed he was when the contest reached the final bell.
After years of frustration, Ogawa had finally captured the IBF super featherweight world title and will now look to make up for lost time.
Biggest win
Winning the IBF world super featherweight world title last November is by far Ogawa’s biggest win.
As previously mentioned, Ogawa frequently found himself suffering setbacks once he had built up significant momentum, but his win over Fuzile to claim the red and gold vacant belt was the culmination of what had been a long journey full of twists and turns.
