The Manx rider, who was knighted earlier this year, will bring the curtain down on a fantastic career at the top of the sport.

Mark Cavendish has confirmed he will retire from cycling following this weekend's Tour de France Singapore Criterium, bringing down the curtain on a glittering career.

The Manx rider, one of the most celebrated riders in the sport's modern history, holds the record for stage wins at the Tour de France, securing his 35th triumph this July.

Among his accolades, Cavendish also won the World Road Race Championships in 2011 and collected a silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in omnium.

He also won the points classification at all three Grand Tours - the Tour de France in 2011 and 2021, the Giro d'Italia in 2013 and the Vuelta a España in 2010.

Cavendish, who was knighted this year in the King's Birthday Honours, previously confirmed this would be his final year in cycling, and will bow out after Sunday's event.

"My racing career - completed it," the 39-year-old wrote on Instagram, in a post confirming that he would step out of the saddle following his time in Singapore.

"Sunday will be the final race of my professional cycling career. I am lucky enough to have done what I love for almost 20 years.

"I can now say that I have achieved everything that I can on the bike. Cycling has given me so much and I love the sport.

"I’ve always wanted to make a difference in it and now I am ready to see what the next chapter has in store for me."
