RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - The MMA world is preparing itself for the return of former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, live on DAZN.

After featuring in two professional boxing bouts, the Cameroonian superstar will step into the cage for the first time since 2022 on Saturday night in the main event of PFL’s Battle of the Giants event.

For a PFL debut, Ngannou faces one of the toughest tests in the form of 2023 PFL heavyweight champion Renan Ferreira, a 6’ 8” Brazilian giant who has won his last four fights by way of knockout.

While the focus will firmly be on Ngannou’s clash with Ferreira, plans are already afoot according to PFL CEO Peter Murray, who first explained that it was Ngannou’s decision to return to the cage after what has been a difficult year for the 38-year-old.

“He’s experienced a horrific tragedy in his life with the loss of his son Kobe, our hearts are always with Francis and his family,” Murray told DAZN.

“This was his decision to continue, and I believe he is fighting for a greater purpose. He’s channelling his energy and we’re very supportive and appreciative, but we didn’t ask him to fight.

“He’s doing it based on his timing, his focus and what’s right for him professionally and from a healing standpoint.”

Murray then discussed what the future holds for Ngannou in the PFL.

“His next fight will be in a cage with the PFL, and he’ll continue to box,” Murray continued.

“I don’t know what those specifics are at this point in time, but let’s get through Saturday night and then those pieces will fall into place.”
