Boxing champion Savannah Marshall made her mixed martial arts debut on Saturday in Newcastle.

Marshall entered MMA with the hopes of getting a rematch with Claressa Shields, who is also signed to PFL. Across the Smart Cage from Marshall was Mirela Vargas. 

Marshall ate several leg kicks to start the fight but battled back from adversity to earn a TKO in the first round.

“Thank god I can punch,” she said in the cage afterward. “You gotta be a little bit crazy to do this."

She called out her former boxing rival Claressa Shields who entered the cage and joked that Marshall looked worse than she did in her PFL debut.

ROUND 1 

Leg kicks open the round from Vargas and Marshall tumbles to the canvas twice. The fight goes to the mat with Vargas on top. Marshall gets back to her feet and unloads huge shots on Vargas before slipping to the canvas. They get back to their feet and she lets her hands go again. Vargas goes down to the canvas and ankle-picked Marshall back down to the ground.  Marshall finds her way back to her feet again and finds her hands again. After eating several shots Vargas takes her back down to the canvas. Vargas is on the top again looking for a submission but Marshall gets to the back of Vargas and gets back to her feet. Marshall puts Vargas against the fence and swings wild, Vargas is eating everything. In the final seconds of the round, Vargas covers up and Marshall earns the TKO finish.
