The UFC 265 pay-per-view just took a major hit.
A source with the UFC confirmed with DAZN News on Thursday that Amanda Nunes vs. Julianna Pena has been canceled due to Nunes testing positive for COVID-19. Arguably the greatest female mixed martial arts fighter was supposed to defend her bantamweight world championship against Pena in the co-main event of UFC 265 in Houston on Aug. 7.
A report by ESPN says the UFC is planning to reschedule the fight once Nunes is healthy and ready to get back into the Octagon. ESPN first broke the news of the Nunes-Pena cancellation.
Nunes is coming off a successful defense of her featherweight championship via a first-round submission of Megan Anderson in March.
Pena bounced back from a submission loss to Germaine de Randamie in October by scoring a third-round submission of Sara McMann via rear-naked choke in January.
The UFC 265 main event pits Derrick Lewis against Cyril Gane for the interim heavyweight championship.
