Introducing Jack Doohan: The Latest Name on the F1 GridDAZN

Although he was only meant to start racing for Alpine-Renault next season, the Enstone-based side have confirmed that Australian Jack Doohan will replace Esteban Ocon with immediate effect.

This means he will race alongside Pierre Gasly in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Ocon, who was contracted to Alpine until the end of the year, has reportedly been released so he can drive for his new team, Haas, in the post-season test at Abu Dhabi on December 10.

The move to release Ocon and bring in Doohan earlier than planned has been described as a win-win for all parties involved.

But who is Jack Doohan?

Anyone who knows anything about motor racing will recognise the famous surname. But is he related to legendary five-time MotoGP champion Mick Doohan? What is his experience? And what should we expect from him this weekend and in the 2025 season ahead?

Here is a quick introduction to Jack Doohan.

1. A famous motorsport name

Yes, Jack Doohan is the son of five-time MotoGP champion Mick Doohan.

However, Jack has carved his path in motorsport on four wheels rather than two. Despite the family connection to motorbike racing, Jack’s focus has always been on Formula 1, and his father's experience has been a guiding force rather than a direct influence.

While it might be thought that his dad was the biggest influence on his career, another mega-name in racing also played a part - Michael Schumacher. The seven-time F1 champion reportedly inspired the young Doohan to take up racing when he was nine years old after gifting him a kart.

2. A rising star in Formula 2

Doohan has impressed in the highly competitive Formula 2 series, securing multiple wins and podium finishes. Driving for Virtuosi Racing, he showcased his skill, finishing among the top contenders in 2023. His ability to handle pressure and produce results in high-stakes scenarios caught Alpine’s attention and secured his promotion to F1.

3. Alpine Academy graduate

Doohan is a product of the Alpine Driver Academy, a program designed to nurture young racing talent. Launched in 2002 by Renault F1, the program has been crucial in the development of a host of young drivers.

Some big names to have graduated before Doohan include Zhou Guanyu, Oscar Piastri and IndyCar driver Christian Lundgaard. Doohan's inclusion in the academy cemented his place as one of the brightest prospects in the sport.

Over the past few years, he has had multiple opportunities to test Alpine’s F1 machinery, ensuring that he is well-prepared for the step up.

4. Driving style and strengths

Doohan is known for his aggressive yet calculated driving style. He is particularly strong in qualifying, often extracting the maximum potential from his car.

This ability to deliver in one-lap situations is expected to help him shine in F1, where precision and adaptability are key.

5. What to expect in Abu Dhabi and beyond

In Abu Dhabi, Doohan will look to gain valuable experience racing alongside Gasly. While expectations are tempered given his inexperience, the weekend provides an opportunity to learn and showcase his raw talent.

Looking ahead to 2025 though, Doohan is expected to be a vital part of Alpine’s rebuilding strategy, with the team hoping his youthful energy complements Gasly's experience.
