Alex Ferguson's funny Premier League title prediction

Former Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson was caught off-guard when interviewed at Cheltenham Festival on Wednesday, but he would not be drawn on Premier League matters.

Ferguson was attending the festival as a die-hard racing fan, but also in his capacity as a horse-owner, and he was approached for a few comments on the action unfolding over the week by an enterprising ITV journalist.

He reflected on his own involvement and his highlights of the events so far, before - perhaps inevitably - questioning turned to football.

His old side United have struggled ever since his departure and while they have a couple of minor domestic trophies and one Europa League to their name, they have won neither the Champions League nor the Premier League without him at the helm.

David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick have been and gone as they looked to rekindle former glories, with none landing a truly signifiant piece of silverware.

Current manager Erik ten Hag looks to have turned the tanker around over the last few months, notwithstanding a calamitious recent 7-0 defeat to Liverpool, but despite being in third place in the league at the moment, the title race is being fought solely between two of Ferguson's arch rivals.

Arsenal, a huge opponent from the 90s and early 2000s, and Manchester City, the new powerhouses, tested Ferguson's nous, and they are out in front for the title with about a third of the season remaining.

Asked for his opinion though, Ferguson gave a succinct and cheeky response: "Not interested!"

In previous days, that might have come with a scowl, and maybe a ban for the journalist, but this time it brought a wry smile afterwards.
