The forward, who ends as his country's joint-third most-capped men's star, was a member of six major tournament squads.

Antoine Griezmann has announced his retirement from international football with immediate effect, ahead of France's Nations League games this October.

The Atletico Madrid attacker finishes his career with Les Bleus as the joint-third most-capped men's player in their history, alongside fellow forward Olivier Giroud.

Griezmann, who scored 44 goals in 137 caps, was a member of six major tournament squads for France, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

He converted a penalty in the final as Didier Deschamps' side won 4-2 against Croatia, and started their loss to Argentina in the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup four years later.

Griezmann was also a member of the France team which won the 2021 UEFA Nations League, and featured for them in this year's UEFA Euro 2024 semi-final finish in Germany.

Taking to social media, the 33-year-old revealed he was hanging up his boots on the global stage in order to help usher in the new crop of attacking talent for the national team.

"It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life," he said. "Wearing this jersey was an honour and a privilege.

"It is time for me to turn a page and make way for the new generation.Thank you for this magnificent tricolour adventure and see you soon."

Griezmann, who made his international debut in March 2014 against the Netherlands, was the Golden Boot winner and Player of the Tournament at UEFA Euro 2016.

He was later named to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Team of the Tournament, where he finished joint-second for goals with four behind England captain Harry Kane.

Griezmann made his last appearance for France as a substitute in their 2-0 win against Belgium in early September, and departs as the team prepare to face Israel.
