Could poor discipline cost the Gunners a chance of winning the Premier League?

Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the Premier League season on Saturday as they lost 2-0 to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium after yet another ten-men finish.

William Saliba saw red in the first half for denying a goal-scoring opportunity after he dragged down Cherries striker Evanlison, who looked to be through on the Gunners' box.

It meant Mikel Arteta's men had to play for around an hour one man down for the third time this season, having dropped points on each occasion.

Such results mean they are already three behind Manchester City and a point further off Liverpool, who they play next weekend.

But how does their red card count compare to Premier League-winning teams of the past? DAZN takes a look.

Who has seen red for Arsenal this season?

Along with William Saliba, Declan Rice was shown a red card in the Gunners' 1-1 draw against Brighton after he was shown a second booking for kicking the ball away.

Leandro Trossard then did the same thing in the 1-1 with Manchester City the following month, before Saliba made it three with his dismissal on Saturday.

How many red cards did Premier League winner teams accumulate in a season?

Looking at the stats below, of the past ten Premier League winners, only Leicester City had three red cards in a season - and that was over the course of an entire campaign.

Since that point, no side has had more than two in one term. You have to go back to Chelsea in their 2015-winning campaign to find a team with four sendings off in one season.

Looking even further back, Manchester United's great treble-winning side of 1999 also only amassed three over their league season.

Alex Ferguson's first-ever winners of the Premier League in 1992-93 meanwhile didn't see a single red during their maiden triumph.

Even Arsenal's own 'Invincibles' team of 2004, known for packing a few noteworthy hard hitters, also only racked up three red cards during their title-winning campaign.
