It took 11 rounds to decide a winner.

Liverpool have claimed the 2021-22 Carabao Cup after defeating Chelsea in a penalty shootout on Sunday.

The teams battled through two hours of high-intensity scoreless play, with several gilt-edged chances for each side along the way. That settled nothing as both goalkeepers, particularly Chelsea's Eduoard Mendy, were excellent throughout the match.

It was with a bit of irony, then, that Mendy had no part of the shootout. Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel elected to bring Kepa Arrizabalaga in off the bench in the final minute of extra time, ostensibly for his prowess in stopping penalty kicks. But Kepa was unable to make a save on any of the 11 attempts made by Liverpool, and when he stepped up needing to score after counterpart Caoimhin Kelleher made no mistake from the spot, Kepa sent his own effort several yards over the crossbar to end the match.

The victory is the ninth League Cup triumph for Liverpool, more than any other club.
