England failed to hold onto an early lead as they drew 1-1 with Denmark on Thursday in Euro 2024 Group C action.

The match was a classic tale of two halves as the opening 45 minutes featured both of the goals and seemingly all of the excitement before the teams sputtered through the second half.

Harry Kane put the Three Lions on the board first with an opportunistic goal from six yards out, after Kyle Walker had put in good work to get the ball into the box. Some half-hearted defending from the Danes resulted in the ball falling to a wide open Kane directly in front of goal, which was easily slotted home by the England captain at the 18-minute mark.

What should have woken up the English actually had a positive effect on Denmark instead as they immediately pushed for an equaliser. After a 15-minute spell in which play was mostly inside the English half, Morten Hjulmand unleashed a rocket from well outside the box in the 34th minute that easily beat Jordan Pickford for the leveller.

From then on out it was a battle between two sides that seemed afraid to make a fatal mistake, as the second half only featured one or two genuine looks at goal for either team.

The result means England did not secure qualification to the Round of 16 as they had hoped, but they still lead the group and are in the driver's seat to advance. Meanwhile, Denmark are in second place but are in no way assured of moving on without a good result on the final matchday of the group stage.
