Luton’s return to the top flight did not go according to plan as they were well beaten by a buoyant Brighton side.
Making their Premier League bow after a successful campaign last season, Luton were brought back down to Earth by The Seagulls who are preparing to get used to life without Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo.
Solly March gave Brighton the lead in the first half and that lead was increased by Joao Pedro who converted a penalty.
Luton thought they had given themselves a chance when Carlton Morris pulled once back but their hopes were dashed when Simon Adingra and Evan Ferguson added late strikes to make it 4-1.
In the day’s early kick off, Arsenal got their title challenge off to a solid start with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest.
Goals from Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka were enough to see off Forest who had Taiwo Awoniyi on the scoresheet.
Everton, strugglers last season, were beaten 1-0 by Fulham who were thankful to Bobby Decordova-Reid for the game’s only goal.
Bournemouth salvaged a point against West Ham with Dominic Solanke’s effort cancelling out Jarrod Bowen’s goal.
And Odsonne Edouard’s goal was enough to give Crystal Palace all three points against Sheffield United who were playing their first Premier League fixture since being relegated in 2021.
