Dwight Yorke says Manchester United should consider a club legend as manager

Manchester United started 2024 with an FA Cup third round victory over Wigan Athletic earlier this week, but their season has been anything but consistent thus far.

Having crashed out of the Champions League in the group stage and sitting well behind the leading pack in the Premier League at the halfway mark of the season, the Red Devils are once again trying to salvage their campaign in the wake of too many disappointing results.

United are on their eighth manager in the 11 years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, and current boss Erik ten Hag faces increasing questions about his job security as the Red Devils continue to struggle.

One former Man United player believes the club should look from within if and when the time comes to replace Ten Hag, although he also suggested a legend from outside of English football as the best solution should the Red Devils part ways with their current manager.

Speaking to Footy Accumulators, treble-winner Dwight Yorke revealed his ideal candidate for the job.

"The club may have to consider putting a club legend in charge on an interim basis, but I think Zinedine Zidane is the only option the board should seriously consider right now," Yorke said. "Look at the stature he has in the game and what he achieved at Real Madrid!"

While Zidane may be the ideal candidate in Yorke's eyes, he also named a former United player who shouldn't be considered.

"I don't see any benefit of appointing Wayne Rooney in a caretaker role should Ten Hag get sacked," he said. "Wazza shouldn't be put in that position - especially before me!"
