The Gunners have been close in recent seasons.

This may be the year that Arsenal finally climbs to the top of the Premier League mountain, according to Emmanuel Petit.

The Gunners have finished in second place behind Manchester City in each of the last two seasons, but Petit believes the upcoming campaign might be the one in which Arsenal claims the league crown for the first time since 2004.

Petit, a former Arsenal player who was part of the league-winning side in 1997-98, pointed to a number of issues facing City that could derail the Sky Blues' efforts to win the league for a fifth straight year and help the North London side leapfrog into the top spot.

"With all the problems that Manchester City are facing, this could be the year that Arsenal beat them to the Premier League title," Petit told Gambling Zone. "This is the most uncertain that Manchester City have been going into a season.

"They have all of the financial charges hanging over them, there are doubts about the long-term future of their star player Kevin De Bruyne and the future of their manager Pep Guardiola.

"Of course, they are the team to beat, the champions, but I don’t think that this season they will be as strong as some of the Manchester City title-winning teams from the past.

"I’m confident that this could be the year where Arsenal win the Premier League."

Turning his attention to Arsenal's qualities, Petit credited a harmonious team culture as a major reason for his belief that this season could be different for the Gunners.

"I'm fully confident on the team ability; it’s quality," he said. "The ambition of the players is to become a Premier League champion after getting so close last season. The environment in the dressing room and the club is wonderful at the moment.

"All of the lights are green at Arsenal, and everyone is moving in the same direction with the shared ambition of winning major trophies. If you want to compete with City, you must give more than 100% all the time, and that is exactly what Arsenal have been doing for the last two years."
