England enter the World Cup as part of one of the most intriguing groups at Qatar 2022.
Along with the United States, Wales and Iran, the English populate Group B, one that promises as many off-field storylines as those written on the pitch. But Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate cannot worry about whatever narratives media and fans latch on to in the lead-up to the matches, as England head into the tournament as the favourites to top the group and make a long run.
A near-perfect Euro 2020 tournament last year served as notice that the English are ready to compete against any side in the world, but the UEFA Nations League brought the team crashing back to Earth. No one doubts the talent level of the current Three Lions side, but recent results call into question whether Southgate can coax a consistent level of performance required to win on the biggest stage of them all.

What stadiums will England play in at World Cup 2022?
Each of England's three group stage matches will be played at a different venue.
Khalifa International Stadium - England vs. Iran
England's first group stage match will be played at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, a 45,416-seat venue that is by far the oldest at Qatar 2022.
Opened in 1976, it's a multipurpose venue that has hosted track and field events as well as football events. The stadium has undergone numerous renovations, including major redevelopments in 2005 and 2017, to increase capacity and amenities.
Major events that have been hosted at the venue include the 2006 Asian Games, 2011 Pan Arab Games, 2019 World Athletics Championships and a pair of 2019 FIFA Club World Cup matches. It will host eight World Cup games, including the third-place match.
Al Bayt Stadium - England vs. USA
A 60,000-seat venue in Al Khor, the Al Bayt Stadium features a retractable roof and will be reduced in size by nearly half of its seating capacity after the World Cup.
Completed in November 2021, the stadium was used for the opening ceremony of the FIFA Arab Cup 2021. It also hosted five matches durig that tournament, including the final.
At Qatar 2022, the stadium will host six group stage matches and three knockout games, including a semi-final.
Ahmad bin Ali Stadium - Wales vs. England
Officially named the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, the Al-Rayyan Stadium is nicknamed as such due to the city in which it stands.
The 50,000-seat venue is actually the second stadium to be built on the same spot, with its predecessor holding less than half the capacity and standing from 2003-2015.
Home to Al-Rayyan SC and Al Kharaitiyat SC of the Qatar Stars League, the stadium opened in 2020 and has since hosted matches in the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup and the FIFA Arab Cup 2021. More recently, the stadium hosted the two intercontinental play-off matches that determined the final two countries (Australia and Costa Rica) to advance to Qatar 2022.
Al-Rayyan Stadium will host seven matches at Qatar 2022.
