Two of the expected favourites for Qatar 2022 aren't heading into the World Cup in the desired form.
Germany and England meet on Monday at Wembley Stadium as the third and fourth place teams, respectively, in Group 3 of the UEFA Nations League A. Neither will advance to the next round regardless of the result, and even worse for the Three Lions is that they have been officially relegated to League B by virtue of finishing bottom of the group.
It's a horrible send-off for the two sides less than two months prior to the World Cup, but England boss Gareth Southgate feels there are still valuable lessons to be learned against the likes of the Germans, Italy and group-leading Hungary.
"We can't say there's no value, these are important matches against top level teams," Southgate said after Friday's loss to Italy.
"It's a spell where of course results are going to be the thing that everybody reacts to, but I thought there were a lot of positive signs from us as a team tonight, lots of good individual performances," he added. "I personally think the performance [against Italy] was a step in the right direction, but I completely understand because of the result that's not going to be the reaction externally.
"We are where we are in terms of the timing, but we've got to do what we can to keep the players on track and believing in what they're doing."
