Manchester United appeared to be cruising towards victory in their FA Cup semi-final against EFL Championship side Coventry City on Sunday.
And then the comeback happened.
With United up 3-0 and the clock ticking down, Coventry hit for three goals over the final 20 minutes of normal time, forcing extra time and a penalty shootout to decide which team would return to Wembley next month to take on Manchester City for the venerable trophy.
But while it was the Red Devils who ultimately prevailed on penalty kicks, the United players and staff were visibly muted in their celebrations immediately following the match.
United manager Erik ten Hag explained that his team were experiencing a range of emotions after a tense 120 minutes of play.
"It was an incredible game, a strange game too," he told ITV. "We had total control for so long and then gave it away in the last part of the game. We did show resilience to win the penalty shootout.
"We had control for 75 minutes and have to give Coventry a compliment for what they did in the last 15 minutes.
"We have to improve. We talk a lot about this. First you have to put yourself in a winning position but then you have to take it over the line. In these moments we are making mistakes and not keeping our responsibilities."
Ultimately, United can now look forward to another showdown with their cross-town rivals, this time with silverware on the line.
That will be the enduring result of Sunday's rollercoaster match, Ten Hag said.
"It's mixed feelings," he explained. "We can be happy with the achievement, getting to the final, that's huge."
