Former Arsenal defender William Gallas believes that Tottenham defender Cristian Romero is capable of earning a move to Barcelona.
Tottenham have impressed this season and while their title challenge under Ange Postecoglou has fallen away as the campaign has continued, they remain in the hunt for a top-four finish, which would bring Champions League football.
Romero has been one of the standout performers in North London and Gallas, who played for Spurs as well as Chelsea, thinks he can get even better from here.
He told Genting Casino: “I think that Cristian Romero can definitely become one of the best centre backs in the world. I think he can be one of the best players in the world . The only thing that he has to change is his attitude.
“When I say attitude, I mean he needs to stop getting himself in situations where he picks up stupid yellow and red cards. Even when he is having a brilliant game, we’ve seen him switch-off and lose focus. He also has a tendency to do something dangerous with his physicality. That is a problem for him and for Tottenham.”
The Frenchman explained that Romero has a responsibility to be more mature on the pitch, adding: “He is twenty-five-years-old. He is at an age where he needs to mature. He needs to control himself and not get involved in silly fights and in silly battles on the pitch. Tottenham can’t afford to lose him in matches.
“He is a very important player for the club and he can lead the defence really well, but he needs to control himself. Tottenham have more chance of winning football matches when Romero is on the pitch.
“Romero has a big, big responsibility on his shoulders. He has to be more mature now. I wouldn’t be surprised if in the next couple of years if he is playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world like Barcelona. He has the potential. He has to improve his discipline. If he can do that, then he can be one of the world’s best centre backs.”
