England's recent 1-0 loss could be a good thing for the team, but only if they have the right mentality, says Glen Johnson.

The retired former Liverpool and England right back said last week's friendly defeat shouldn't be a death knell for the team's status as one of the favourites to win Euro 2024.

Speaking to Paddy Power , Johnson explained that while the loss wasn't desired, it could provide the needed spark that propels the Three Lions to bigger and better things.

“You don’t want to be losing pre-tournament friendlies," Johnson said. "You want to learn something from these games and gain momentum going into the tournament. There would be nothing better if we had beaten Iceland 3-0, Harry Kane [had] scored two and someone else got one because the strikers need this belief.

“The Iceland game was a missed opportunity and a now a complete waste of time but hopefully it’ll be a wakeup call to let them know that they can’t go into games and win them if you’re not performing.

“On paper, it looks like a terrible result but hopefully it’ll give them a kick up the backside to make them realise that they’re not indestructible and that they’ll have to be fully at it to get the job done."
