Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe thinks that a number of players need to move on from Old Trafford if things are to improve with the club.

United have struggled in manager Erik ten Hag’s second season, and a number of players have been linked with an exit as Jim Ratcliffe plans to reshape the squad in the summer transfer window.

Speaking to Footy Accumulators, Sharpe was not quite sure what was needed to provide the missing ingredient, but was aware that Anthony Martial and others would likely need to depart.

He said: “It’s a difficult thing to put your finger on. They [Manchester United] have had so many injuries this season already, and I don’t think that many people can comprehend. If you look at the bench, they’ve never really had the strength in depth to change a game late on.

“So I think the general consensus is that Martial has probably had his day. On his day I think he’s unplayable, but I don’t think that he does it regularly enough - I don’t think he scores enough goals.

“I think that he will be moved on in summer and then another centre forward can come in to help out Hojlund. Although, I think that Garnacho has been a breath of fresh air.

“Rashford seems to be going through a very difficult period in his career. After last season where he scored so many goals, and so there were big things expected of him this season, but he’s certainly not produced. There were rumours of him leaving, but I’m not sure if that’s the right move or not.

“Antony has certainly struggled so maybe they [Manchester United] do need another winger. And then Kobbie Mainoo has been a revelation this season in midfield. I think we might be seeing the last of Casemiro, I’m not sure if his legs can take the rigours of the Premier League week in week out.

“And then there’s been injuries at the centre back position. I think if we can get Martinez in the team and keep him fit for a while. Also, they [Manchester United] are looking like maybe they’re not going to keep Varane, so maybe another centre half is needed and then they might have some sort of squad.”
