Louis Saha thinks Chelsea still have plenty of work to do if they want to match Manchester City this season.
The two played last weekend, with City coming away with three points, and Chelsea have to trim their squad after another busy transfer window.
Todd Boehly’s ownership has been a troubled one at Stamford Bridge, but speaking to Paddy Power, Saha acknowledged that there is plenty of potential for Enzo Maresca to work with.
He explained: “Manchester City can win without Rodri for sure because they have so many good players to come in for him. Chelsea have great young players with lots of potential, but that means that they still need to improve.
“But you don’t look at players like Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Bernardo Silva or even Erling Haaland as potential players. They have already topped it. Phil Foden had to improve a bit and he did that last year already. Those players at Manchester City are at the very top of their game, so it’s not about potential.
“Chelsea are a team full of potential but aren’t anywhere near it so it means they’re going to make mistakes. All over the pitch they’re open to mistakes. I’m not saying they will make mistakes every game, but they still have to learn, and Enzo Maresca is going to have to get them to learn it pretty quickly. It’s a pretty big task for any manager.
“Manchester City are the only team at this level who don't have any players with potential, apart from maybe Foden and Jérémy Doku who can get a few more goals but that’s it. Kevin de Bruyne is the best assister every year and we can’t ask Haaland to score any more goals.”
