The pressure remains on the Red Devils' boss.

Mark Lawrenson believes Erik ten Hag is still walking the Manchester United tightrope despite being given a new contract in the summer.

United have made another stuttering start to the season, and on Wednesday night they were held to a 1-1 draw by Twente at Old Trafford in their opening Europa League game.

The former Liverpool defender wasn't a fan of the way Ten Hag was treated over the summer but fears another slump under him could end up costing the Dutchman his job.

“I think the treatment of Erik ten Hag over the summer wasn’t great," Lawrenson told Sports Casting.

"They were hawking around looking at potential suitors for Ten Hag’s job, I thought at one stage that he’d had enough and might just walk away. Since then, it looks like they’ve kissed and made up.

“I’m still not convinced with United but I do think they’ll be better this season. Will they be good enough to appease their owners, I’m not sure. I think if they have another slump, Ten Hag will get sacked. It seems like they’re waiting for that to happen.”

Man United return to Premier League action on Sunday when they host Tottenham Hotspur.
