Former Liverpool star says Arsenal still not a title threat

Arsenal were full value for their 3-1 victory over Liverpool last week, which pulled the Gunners to within two points of the Premier League-leading Reds.

The North London side were in control throughout the match, with Liverpool only getting onto the score sheet due to an own-goal by Arsenal defender Gabriel. The result was exactly what Mikel Arteta's side needed, as they'd fallen five points back and could not afford to slip even further with Manchester City also involved in the title race.

While the victory was massive for the Gunners, they still find themselves two points behind, and one former Liverpool stalwart doesn't think Arsenal have it within them to catch up.

Speaking to Paddy Power, longtime former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson explained his reasoning for not having faith in Arteta's side to challenge for the Premier League crown.

“The title race is still just between Liverpool and Manchester City [despite Arsenal’s win over Liverpool] ," Lawrenson said. "It was a good result for Arsenal but they’re just lacking something which is a striker.

“They can’t nick a win on a bad day and that’s how you win the title. It’s not by winning 4-0 against the lesser teams, it’s when you’re not playing well but you can still win."

Lawrenson pointed to Man City as a side that can play through adversity, which he doesn't believe Arsenal can do.

“City are a bit different, but they still go behind in some games – like Brentford – and manage to come back to win the game," he said. "I don’t think Arsenal have got that back.

"They get a bit panicky when they’re chasing games and they’re not particularly good at that. The top teams have this patience where they keep playing a certain way, knowing they’ll get opportunities and often, they’ll win games.”
