Change is constant throughout all aspects of life, and football's metamorphosis continues as rules and playing styles adapt to modern expectations.
However, not all change is easily accepted, and for one former Premier League manager there are some new elements to the game that haven't yet shown their value.
Martin O'Neill, who has spent a lifetime in the sport as a player and manager, was speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet, when he shared his feelings about some of the newer aspects of football that rub him the wrong way.
“I still don’t know on VAR [video assistant referees]," O'Neill said. "What [also] irritates me is the boys taking the corner kicks and they are taking the ball out. There should be a new rule set – if I had my rule, I would say that you have to have that ball inside that [quarter circle]."
While O'Neill's reticence for some of the more modern aspects of the game may paint the 72-year-old as a curmudgeon, he does have a rather progressive take on one of the most fundamental ways the sport is officiated and has offered an alternative.
“I would take the time of the referee out of his hands," he said. "So, there would be a clock – a bit like they do in Rugby – where they stop the game.”
