Glen Johnson isn't worried about Liverpool's lack of activity on the transfer market so far.
The Reds are expected to bring in some new faces as the transition from Jurgen Klopp to Arne Slot continues at Anfield, but things have been quiet on that front despite the transfer window having been open for nearly two weeks.
However, former Liverpool defender Johnson isn't too concerned about the dearth of moves yet. Speaking to Paddy Power, Johnson explained how the current window feels familiar to those of recent years.
“Liverpool need to make some signings this summer," Johnson said. "This window feels like last year – they never go out and panic buy or come out of the traps and buy five or six players. They’re always calm and calculated, and I’m sure they have a shortlist of who they want to get. They need to sign a few players to refresh and replace a few old legs, and although it sounds quiet on the outside, I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of work going on behind the scenes.”
One such move could be finding a replacement for Mohamed Salah, the club icon who is the subject of admiration from the Saudi Pro League.
Newcastle and England winger Anthony Gordon is one of the names linked to Liverpool as they prepare for life after Salah, but Johnson's not convinced it would be a like-for-like move.
Instead, Johnson fears Gordon may find himself behind another current Liverpool attacker should he join the club.
“I like Anthony Gordon as a player, but whether he is a replacement for Mo Salah, I’m not sure – they're different types of players," he said.
“I like him as a player – he's direct, he can get some assists and obviously goals too. The problem is that if he can’t play down the middle, I don’t think he’ll be ahead of Luis Díaz. Liverpool need players though, and if they can get him for a good deal, they should try and sign him.”
