It's safe to say that Erik ten Hag did not agree with a crucial refereeing decision that played a major part of Manchester United's 2-1 loss at West Ham United on Sunday.

The teams were deadlocked at 1-1 heading into stoppage time, but a penalty was assessed in the 90th minute after Red Devils defender Matthijs de Ligt was judged to have fouled Danny Ings inside the 18-yard box, leading to Jarrod Bowen's successful spot-kick after a lengthy VAR review.

It was a seminal moment in the match as the Hammers defended their home turf and claimed all three points from their visitors, and for Ten Hag it was another lost opportunity to secure a result.

However, the Man United manager wasn't laying all the blame at the feet of the officials.

"Three times this season we feel injustice," Ten Hag told BBC Match of the Day. "We have to score, we created so many chances. We should've been two or three up.

"Second half we were forcing it but we allowed them into the game. When you are losing 1-0 you need big personality and character of the team and showed resilience to get back into it [with Casemiro's 81st-minute equaliser]. Unfair and unjust the way we conceded the penalty."

As for the penalty call itself, Ten Hag's frustration lies mostly in the way the VAR was used.

"It was so difficult to see," he said. "Before the season there was the instruction about VAR only interfering in clear and obvious mistakes. That is definitely not a clear and obvious mistake from the on field referee.

"More frustrations but I can do nothing with that. They don't collect points and that's what we have to do. We have to look in the mirror, we don't score in a good game from our side. Create loads of chances and concede none but when you lose in this way it's a bad feeling."
