It’s not the strongest competition in Europe - and Chelsea have shown they are a league above their opponents in this season’s UEFA Europa Conference League - but you can only play the team in front of you, and on Thursday night, Marc Guiu was the star of the show as he bagged a hattrick against Irish outfit Shamrock Rovers in a 5-1 win.
The victory consolidated Chelsea’s lead at the top of the table, undefeated in six games, but it also begged the question, who is Marc Guiu?
Who is Marc Guiu?
Marc Guiu is one of the brightest young talents at Chelsea. The 18-year-old forward is quickly establishing himself as a player to watch, blending technical skill with a sharp eye for goal.
Born in Spain, Guiu came through the prestigious Barcelona academy, La Masia, before making the switch to Chelsea in July 2024. His quick adaptation to English football and his impressive performances have seen him garner attention from fans and scouts alike.
Early career and move to Chelsea
Guiu began his football journey at FC Barcelona, where he developed under one of the world's most renowned youth systems. Known for his versatility and intelligence on the ball, Guiu often played as a central striker but was equally effective on the wings.
Chelsea identified his potential and signed him during the 2024 summer transfer window. Despite moving to a new country and adapting to a more physical league, Guiu wasted no time making an impact, becoming a key figure for the Chelsea Under-21s. He made his debut for the Blues first team on 18 August when he came on as a substitute in a 2-0 loss against Manchester City.
The hattrick against Shamrock Rovers
Guiu’s standout moment came in his first Chelsea start during Thursday's UEFA Europa Conference League fixture, where he scored a sensational hattrick to lead Chelsea to a dominant victory over Shamrock Rovers.
- First Goal: A poacher’s finish from close range that showcased his ability to anticipate and react quickly as he jumped onto an error from the keeper.
- Second Goal: A great left-footed finish from a tight angle after he charged onto an under-hit back-pass and rounded the keeper.
- Third Goal: A precise header from a set-piece routine which highlighted his aerial prowess and positioning.
His performance not only secured three points for Chelsea but also demonstrated his all-around attacking ability.
Playing style
Guiu is a dynamic forward with a mix of pace, technical skill, and an instinctive knack for finding the back of the net. He excels in one-on-one situations, often using his agility and quick footwork to beat defenders. His movement off the ball is equally impressive, allowing him to exploit spaces and create opportunities for himself and his teammates.
In addition to his attacking qualities, Guiu is known for his work rate and pressing ability, making him a modern forward capable of fitting into various tactical systems.
Future potential
Chelsea have a big squad that’s packed with quality. It’s also a young squad and manager Enzo Maresca is known for his ability to work with young talents and develop them. Guiu will need to be patient, but he has shown that he has the ability to mix it alongside seasoned internationals.
When chances have come his way, he has taken them, so it seems likely that he will continue to feature for the Stamford Bridge side. Signed on a five-year deal, if he doesn’t get sufficient game time for Chelsea, he could benefit from a loan move, but for now, expect to see him in and around the first team.
