Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe praised both Andre Onana and Harry Maguire after coming through tough periods this season.
Onana’s debut season has been littered with errors in goal since he joined from Inter Milan, while Maguire almost joined West Ham in the summer and looked bereft of confidence at times.
However, the goalkeeper has improved rapidly in recent months after receiving the constant support of manager Erik ten Hag, and the Dutchman has increasingly favoured the England central defender as other members of the Old Trafford backline have struggled.
Speaking to BetVictor, Sharpe picked them out for their mental strength and improved performances.
He said: “I think Andre Onana has really come good having been under a lot of pressure and scrutiny. He’s done fantastically well, although he has had a lot of practice because Manchester United are facing more shots than any other team!
“I also have to take my hat off to Harry Maguire because he was totally out in the cold at the start of the season and he was getting berated by every fan and was the subject of every meme.
“He took a lot of stick so fair play to him for coming back and putting in the performance that he has, he’s been a man mountain at the back.”
