He thinks the board will take a view.

Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe thinks that Erik ten Hag is almost certain to keep his job this summer.

The Dutchman has struggled in his second season at Old Trafford after a promising first campaign, and there is no guarantee that United will even get Europa Conference League football next season.

With new billionaire co-owner Jim Ratcliffe in place, he is ringing the changes behind the scenes, and there is mounting speculation he will replace Ten Hag unless there is significant improvement in the coming weeks.

Speaking to Footy Accumulators, Sharpe thinks there is enough to keep the manager in a job ahead of next year.

He said: “The problem has been consistency this season. We had the result against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter final, and everybody got very excited, but then the team turned around and had poor performances in the next games.

“I think they [Manchester United] have shown flashes of brilliance, but also flashes of poor organisation and poor individual performances. So it’s been a very difficult season.

“I think the sign of success would obviously be getting top four, but we are a bit too far away from the pack now. But certainly, an FA Cup win would go down well and give some of the players a bit of confidence and certainly get them on a winning track. You’ve got to win things to know what it feels like, and then go on to win more.

“I would like to think it [Erik ten Hag’s job] is safe regardless. I think he’s building something, but I think he does need a bit of help with the playing staff. There are a few people who probably need to leave the club, and a few new faces need to come in.

“But I don’t think it would be beneficial to be bringing in a new manager with new ideas, and not like half the team and want to make a load of changes.

“So, I think he [ten Hag] needs to be given a bit more time, I think we have seen flashes of really good stuff. If we [Manchester United] can strengthen again in the summer, then I think we will have a really good chance of competing for the top four again next year.

“I don’t think they’ll be competing to win the league next year, but certainly for the top four.”
