Jamie Carragher is hopeful that Liverpool will maintain their high standards in the upcoming Premier League season.
The Reds finished third in 2023-24, which was the last season for Jurgen Klopp as the club's manager. Arne Slot has replaced Klopp and has massive shoes to fill, but Carragher is cautiously optimistic that there won't be much of a drop-off during the transition from one of the club's most iconic managers to the incoming Dutch boss.
“I don’t think they’ll tank [Liverpool] no, I think Liverpool overachieved last season in terms of being in the title race for so long, I don’t think anybody really expected that," Carragher said while speaking on Stick to Football, brought to you by Sky Bet.
"And if Liverpool had a similar sort of season, I’d be delighted."
Carragher, a Champions League winner with Liverpool in 2005, compared the fortunes of other big Premier League sides when moving on from legendary managers.
“It remains to be seen, sometimes new manager, fresh voice and I know what you are thinking, David Moyes comes in after [Sir Alex] Ferguson, or Unai Emery after Arsène Wenger, there’s going to be a huge shift, there’s no doubt about that," he said.
"But the pre-season has gone pretty well, you know beating Manchester United, beating Arsenal, good result against Sevilla."
