Manchester City finally earned a victory over a top-five side in the Premier League with a 4-1 thrashing of Aston Villa on Wednesday.

Phil Foden scored a second-half hat-trick to propel the Sky Blues to the win, which keeps them within a point of league leaders Arsenal and second place Liverpool — the latter of whom are in action on Thursday against Sheffield United.

Foden has already been called the best player in the league by manager Pep Guardiola, and followng his star performance on Wednesday the 23-year-old earned the plaudits of one of his team-mates.

"With this player he grows every single year," City midfielder Rodri said to TNT Sports of Foden. "He can score whatever he wants, arriving in the box, he has a special quality, three [goals] today and so happy for him."

As noted, Wednesday's match marked the first win for City this season against a top-five side in the league. The Sky Blues got that particular monkey off their back in style, and can now focus on the intense three-way title race at the top of the table.

"[It's] something we've been struggling with this season to face the teams at the top - beating Aston Villa 4-1 is not easy but we did it," Rodri said.

"We're there, we knew we had to do our homework. We did it and now we focus on the next game."
