Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson sees only one option for the club as they hunt a replacement for Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp announced that he would be quitting Anfield at the end of the season, and Xabi Alonso was immediately put in the frame to step in.
Alonso has led Bayer Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga and they look on course to win the German league this season in what would be a huge upset.
His past as a Liverpool midfielder means he is in many ways a logical and emotional successor to Klopp, though Steven Gerrard has also been mentioned, amongst others.
The planned departure of Thomas Tuchel from Bayern Munich has also clouded the issue.
However, speaking to Paddy Power, Lawrenson advised Alonso to join Liverpool.
He said: “If I were Xabi Alonso, I’d go to Liverpool. It’s difficult to know what he thinks – I don’t think he would leave Bayer Leverkusen to go to Bayern. If he wants the Liverpool job, it will be his. It will be a big pull for him having played there.
"They’ll be fine if they can play anything like the way he played when he was at Liverpool. Once he gets his feet under the table, nothing will be new to him. He speaks the language; he knows the way he plays and it’s very similar to Liverpool.
“If he didn’t take it, I’d be ringing Tottenham up and trying to hire Ange Postecoglou – I feel he has quite a bit of Klopp in him. At the moment, I can’t see past Alonso – he knows the way English football is and has so many great academy players coming through.”
