The former attacker has outlined what needs to happen at Old Trafford if the Red Devils are to enjoy success once more.

Manchester United will need to move on from Erik ten Hag with a change of manager before their fortunes can turn again, believes ex-forward Michael Owen.

The Dutchman is in his third season with the Premier League club and has delivered silverware in both of his campaigns so far, including a shock FA Cup success last term.

That victory arguably helped secure Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford under new owners INEOS, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe opting to renew his contract.

A sluggish start to the new term has seen the pressure weigh heavily on Ten Hag again however, and Owen thinks there is no way United can revive their prospects with him in charge.

“If you want to see Manchester United back on the right path, then they need an upturn in form from the last two seasons,” Owen told TVSporten.

“They squirmed into fourth the year before, which was unbelievable looking back.

“From what they were last year to the start of this year, they’ve stuck with the same manager and the signings they’ve made might not be enough to turn the corner.

“That’s why I can’t see them in the top four. I think Man Utd are going to need a change of manager before they have an upturn in fortunes.

“They possibly got lucky to get three points at home in the first game. But whichever way you look at it, you know, there's not enough change.

“I'm still of the opinion that there's a little bit that needs to change at Manchester United before they can start progressing.
