The Gunners suffered a defeat on the road against the Serie A outfit, but their loss was not without a degree of controversy.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta suggests they were "very harshly done" regarding two penalty calls ast they lost 1-0 to Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League.

Hakan Calhanoglu's spot-kick in first-half injury time was the difference at San Siro as the Gunners slumped to consecutive losses after a Premier League defeat to Newcastle.

The decision was made after Mikel Merino handled the ball following a Mehdi Taremi flick following a corner, but the former was not so lucky down the other end of the pitch.

There, the Spain international was seemingly punched by Yann Sommer during an attempted clearance, and Arteta aired his frustration afterwards.

"We were very harshly done by in the sense that is obvious [for] both penalties," he told TNT Sports. If you are going to give a penalty, the other one has to be [too].

"He punches him in the head. There is no deflection, nothing you can do in the box, so can he get away from it? If he is going to give that the other has to be 100% a penalty."

Arsenal's hopes of mounting a challenge for Premier League success have stuttered this term amid a slew of injuries and red card calls against them.

They currently lie fifth in the top flight, seven points off leaders Liverpool, and have taken just two wins in the UEFA Champions League this season.

A crucial London derby encounter with fourth-place Chelsea comes this weekend before teams sign off for the November international break.
