Eddie Howe was quick to go to his bench on Sunday and it worked as Newcastle United earned a comeback 2-1 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Magpies found themselves in an early hole after Mario Lemina's 36th-minute goal gave the hosts the lead, prompting Howe to make a triple substitution to start the second half.

Among the entrants into the match was Harvey Barnes, who scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute following Fabian Schär's equaliser five minutes earlier.

For Howe, the influx of Barnes, Sandro Tonali and Joe Willock to start the second half, plus the 64th-minute introduction of Kieran Trippier, changed the match for the better and showed that Newcastle will need their full squad to contribute as they navigate a busy season.

"I do think it is a squad game and we need to use the good players that we have," Howe told BBC Match of the Day. "I'm very prepared to make early changes if I feel something is not right as it was today.

"There wasn't any hesitation from my view, we need to inject some energy and just a new dynamic into the team. That's not a reflection on the players that came off but thankfully it helped us this time."
