The 2024-25 National League season is live on DAZN around the globe right now, and 2025 kicked off with some big results across the division.

While some New Year's Day games were casualties of the weather, there were some big results in the promotion race at the top of the table.

Here, DAZN looks back at the headlines from the first games of the new year.

Latics run comes to a halt at Hartlepool

Oldham had been the form team in the National League going into their game with Hartlepool, unbeaten in seven games and starting to join the conversation in the automatic promotion rush.

All looked to be going to plan when Josh Lundstram put the away side in the lead, but it was Lennie Lawrenece's men who fought back. Luke Waterfall equalised before the break before Gomez Mancini struck early in the second half to give Hartlepool the win.

Mickey Mellon's team still have two games in hand on the top two, but the defeat was a blow in their promotion bid.

City back on top

A trio of teams have taken turns claiming the top spot in the league, and to kick off 2025, York City are currently sitting back at the summit.

They claimed a notable victory over top six contenders Gateshead on New Year's Day, thanks to Marvin Jonnie Armstrong's first-half winner.

It means they now have a slender one-point lead over second-placed Forest Green Rovers.

New Year bragging rights

The big derby on New Year's Day was in Essex as Braintree hosted county rivals Southend - and it was the away side who took home the points.

Aribim Pepple's twentieth-minute strike was the difference between the two sides, a result that sees Southend move further away from the danger zone at the bottom end of the table.

However, Braintree remain in a scrap, and sit just outside the bottom four on goal difference.
