The former Chelsea winger believes one player is receiving unfair treatment.

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin believes current defender Thiago Silva should not be seen as a scapegoat for the team's current defensive problems.

Silva arrived at Stamford Bridge in August 2020, and despite being 39-years-old, he is one of the club's most reliable defenders and is still producing match winning performances.

However, this season is one that has not gone too well for Chelsea and off the pitch Silva has been embroiled in a recent critical exchange between his wife and manager Mauricio Pochettino.

This has not helped the frustrated atmosphere from fans surrounding the team with the defence failing to deliver during what has been a mixed Premier League campaign, with some beginning to blame Silva for the club's struggles at the back.

Nevin on the other hand was quick to point out in an interview with Lucky Block that Silva is not the one to blame when it comes to Chelsea's defensive issues.

“Chelsea need to use him [Silva] as much as they can. It's fine if they want to leave him out every other game or rest him when they have to, then so be it," Nevin said.

"He's still capable of scoring the odd goal, his reading of the game is phenomenal, and any player who plays alongside him will listen to him.

“Silva may leave at the end of the season, but I wouldn't be shocked if he stayed another year. Chelsea know that he won't last forever.

"I wouldn't, however, blame Silva for how Chelsea have at the back. He's been anything but a problem. He's an easy one to point to when there's been the odd mistake, but the reality is that Chelsea's problems don't stem from Thiago Silva."
