Dietmar Hamann thinks Liverpool could be in the market for a new manager by the end of the calendar year, and he believes he knows just the candidate to take over under such circumstances.
Arne Slot has replaced beloved manager Jurgen Klopp at Anfield and has not yet been in charge for an actual match, yet Hamann envisoned a scenario in which the Dutchman wears out his welcome quickly.
Should the unthinkable come to pass, Hamann has a candidate with links to Liverpool in mind to take over.
Speaking to TopOffshoreCasinos, the retired Liverpool midfielder stressed that he hopes for the best for Slot but could see Xabi Alonso taking over if things go south.
"Things happen very quickly in football," Hamann said. "Maybe Liverpool end up needing a new manager at Christmas? Stranger things have happened.
"You wish Arne Slot all the best but if you have a bad start then fans can get upset and really and you never know, but I hope he is at Liverpool for years to come.
"Can I see Alonso at Liverpool one day? Yeah, of course I can. But it's always a matter of timing.
"They just need to beat Bayern Munich to land Alonso - they will want him too but I back the Reds to seal his signature."
