Former Premier League winger Shaun Wright-Phillips believes that there have been improvements in how Bruno Fernandes conducts himself as captain of Manchester United.
The past few weeks have been ones to forget for United and it all came to a head in the 3-0 defeat to rivals Manchester City last month.
Following the loss to City, a number of players came under heavy criticism including Fernandes with some ex-players calling for the captaincy to be taken away from the Portuguese international as a result of his behaviour towards referees and this was something Wright-Phillips initially agreed with.
"Off the games previous before the weekend [against Fulham], I saw him throw his arms in the air, argue with the referee and of course that’s not something you want your captain to do," Wright-Phillips said in an interview with DAZN courtesy of newbettingsites.uk.
"He’s the one who is supposed to set an example, keep everybody calm, boost people’s confidence and I never really saw that in those games."
After what had been a torrid few weeks, Fernandes seems to have taken these criticisms on board and played a vital role in United's trip to Fulham last weekend where he scored the winning goal.
Now it's up to Fernandes to maintain these potentially match winning performances and if he can do that, Wright-Phillips does not see any reason as to why the captain's armband should be taken away from the 29-year-old.
"In the game against Fulham, what I liked more about him is that there were loads of times when he was tracking back, putting in tackles like the old Bruno that we used to see," Wright-Phillips continued.
"Off that performance, nobody would suggest taking the captaincy away.
"From my point of view, if he can maintain that, even when things are not going well, I think he has the ability to lead as a captain."
United return to Premier League action on Saturday when they welcome struggling Luton Town to Old Trafford.
