Spain defeat England to win World Cup - Player ratings for England as one player stands outGetty

It was heartbreak for England in the Women’s World Cup Final.

Olga Carmona’s first half goal was enough to decide the game, but it could have been worse for England if not for Mary Earps who saved Jenni Hermoso’s penalty after Keira Walsh was punished by VAR for handball.

Here, DAZN looks at England’s performance and rates the players for their efforts in what was a closely fought final.

Mary Earps - 9

England’s best player by quite a distance. Made excellent penalty save in second half and without her contribution, the score could have been embarrassing

Alex Greenwood – 6

Won a number of aerial battles and was comfortable in possession. Will have wanted to make a bigger impact from England's set pieces

Millie Bright – 7

Could have been a tough day for Bright going up against the pace of Spain’s fluid attacks, but she can be happy with her performance

Jessica Carter - 6

Solid throughout and made a few vital blocks. One of England’s most reliable players.

Rachel Daly – 5

Brought off at half-time and can have no complaints. Struggled to make an impact in the game and was constantly outnumbered by Spain’s midfield.

Keira Walsh – 7

Never let her head go down when up against a superb Spain midfield. Kept battling and refused to give up.

Ella Toone – 6

Gave her defence plenty of protection but was unable to contribute at the other end of the pitch.

Georgia Stanway – 7

England’s best midfielder and lively throughout. At the heart of England’s best moments but couldn’t go one step further in finding the crucial equaliser.

Lucy Bronze – 5

At fault for the goal and it appeared the moment stayed with her for the game’s remainder. An important player for England but could not make it happen today.

Lauren Hemp – 8

England’s best chance of a goal all game and was unlucky not to score after hitting the bar in first half. Relentless throughout and did not let Spain’s defence settle.

Alessia Russo – 5

Outstanding against Australia, Russo was unable to replicate that form against Spain. Withdrawn at half time.

Subs

Lauren James – 7

Might have had a bigger impact if she started but James was lively in spells and gave England a little lift when coming on.

Chloe Kelly – 8

Flourished on the right wing and was a good outlet for England. Direct at all times and put in several useful crosses

Bethany England – 5

Introduced to the action late but too late to make an impression.
