Former England striker Teddy Sheringham believes that it could backfire to risk Kobbie Mainoo at Euro 2024.
The Manchester United midfielder broke into the first team as a regular under Erik ten Hag this season, and the 19-year-old was swiftly brought into the England setup by Gareth Southgate.
While he has impressed at times, there have been some difficulties, and Sheringham cautioned against expecting too much.
Speaking to Poker Sites, he said: “It might be a little too early for Kobbie Mainoo.
“However, I think he showed in the FA Cup final that he doesn’t get overwhelmed or too excited about the big games, he takes it all in his stride and plays with a nice coolness about him.
“I think Declan Rice holds his position but if there was something to happen to him in the first couple of games, I don’t think Gareth would have a problem with putting him in there, otherwise he wouldn’t have picked him.”
The former United and Spurs man pointed to two more experienced midfielders as the potential stars, adding: “I definitely think Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham will light up the tournament for England. They’ve both had outstanding seasons.
“It’s not always great going into a tournament after long seasons and playing in cup finals, because the fatigue just extends, but I’m confident they can continue their fantastic form for their country.”
