Teddy Sheringham labels outgoing Manchester United stalwart a 'disappointment'

Anthony Martial's time with Manchester United has been "underwhelming," according to Teddy Sheringham.

Martial will leave United this summer after nine seasons at Old Trafford, with the French forward not able to crack double-digit goals in any of the four most recent campaigns.

The drought came after Martial poured in 23 goals across all competitions in 2019-20, as he struggled with form and fitness in recent years. A brief loan spell to Sevilla in 2022 saw Martial score just once for the Spanish side, in the Europa League.

With his poor form lasting several seasons, it's hardly a surprise that the 28-year-old is moving on.

For Sheringham, Martial's tenure was a rollercoaster that ultimately fizzled out. Sheringham was speaking on behalf of BoyleSports, who offer the latest Euro 2024 betting, and said: “I think with Anthony Martial, I think there's been optimism and disappointment, optimism again and finally disappointment. I don't think that's any surprise that he's leaving the club this year.

“I don't know what's been going on in his body and whether he has struggled with injuries or. But I think the fact that at least two different managers have given him new contracts shows that there was so much optimism over his ability.

“But he hasn’t fulfilled that promise and I think this time it was inevitable that he wasn’t going to get a new contract.

“Without a doubt his time at the club has been underwhelming, that’s how I would describe his Manchester United career."

In short, Sheringham felt Martial was not up to the standards of the club.

“There was a lot of optimism but it fell flat most of the time, it isn't good enough when you're playing for Manchester United,” he said.
